Oscar lần thứ 82 đánh dấu sự thay đổi quan trọng trong khâu bình chọn, bởi đây là lần đầu tiên kể từ năm 1943, có đến 10 phim được nhận đề cử ở hạng mục phim hay nhất chứ không phải 5 phim như thường lệ.

Ngoài Avatar và The Hurt Locker, 8 phim còn lại vinh dự lọt vào danh sách đề cử Oscar năm nay ở hạng mục phim hay nhất là: District 9, Up, Inglourious Basterds, The Blind Side, Up in The Air, A Serious Man, An Education và Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' By Sapphire.
Trong cuộc đua giành tượng vàng Oscar ở hạng mục phim hay nhất và đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất, cặp vợ chồng cũ James Cameron và Kathryn Bigelow có vẻ ngang tài ngang sức.
Bản thân họ cũng như hai bộ phim do họ đạo diễn đã đoạt nhiều giải thưởng danh giá: Quả cầu vàng phim hay nhất dành cho Avatar, Quả cầu vàng đạo diễn xuất sắc nhất cho Cameron, giải thưởng của Hiệp hội đạo diễn Mỹ và Hiệp hội các nhà sản xuất Mỹ cho The Hurt Locker...
Kathryn Bigelow là một trong bốn nữ đạo diễn duy nhất trong lịch sử Oscar được nhận đề cử ở hạng mục đạo diễn, cùng với Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, 2003), Jane Campion (The Piano, 1993) và Lena Wertmuller (Seven Beauties, 1975). Từ đó đến nay, chưa có phụ nữ nào giành chiến thắng tại hạng mục này.
Cùng được nhận đề cử ở hạng mục đạo diễn xuất sắc còn có Jason Reitman với Up in the Air, Quentin Tarantino với Inglourious Basterds. Up in the Air còn nhận thêm đề cử kịch bản phóng tác xuất sắc, trong khi Tarantino nhận đề cử kịch bản gốc xuất sắc.
Đúng như dự đoán, Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) và George Clooney (Up in the Air) đều có tên trong danh sách đề cử nam diễn viên chính xuất sắc, cùng với Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus) và Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).
Nhận đề cử ở hạng mục này về phía nữ là các diễn viên: Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious: Based on the Novel `Push' by Sapphire) và Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia).
