Resort 2017
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it—and Sachin & Babi’s recipe for flirty partywear with just the right amount of flou is far from broken. Since Pre-Fall 2016, designers Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia have mined a certain Latin-influenced look comprised of well-placed, oversize ruffles and bold florals that has been a hit with customers. It was with this south-of-the-border spirit that the Ahluwalias approached Resort, cutting the frills with notes pulled from Japan, like obi belting, ink-drawn flowers, and a muted, mostly monochrome palette. The resulting collection has a more pared-down feel than what one might expect from the color-obsessed duo. (Coral red and electric cerulean pieces exist but were held from the lookbook.) Even so, those who are familiar with the brand will find something to like. Younger shoppers will be drawn to sheer lace blouses, while more mature types will reach for the grown-up pencil skirts in pale pink with stretch black backing and jumpsuits with exaggerated tie belts. The eveningwear offering, one of Sachin & Babi’s strongest categories, is robust this season, ranging from a floaty white gown that hangs off the shoulders to a proper black column comprised of layered lacy panels. The rationale for more gowns than ever is not only due to the line arriving around holiday gala season. “We’ll have a new President when the collection is available,” said Sachin. And no matter who it might be, the political crowd will need something to wear to Washington, D.C.’s swankiest celebrations. The only rule? No red or blue.
